What is a Himalayan salt lamp?
A Himalayan salt lamp is made from a large, solid piece of pink rock salt, mined in the Punjab region of Pakistan. The best-known mine is the Khewra salt mine — one of the largest and oldest salt mines in the world. The salt was formed hundreds of millions of years ago from evaporated oceans.
Inside the salt stone is a fitting with a warm incandescent bulb. As soon as the lamp is on, the pink crystal gives off a warm, muted glow that instantly changes the atmosphere of the room. Every pink salt lamp is unique: the colour varies from soft light pink to deep orange-pink, depending on the amount of iron and other minerals in the salt. Caring for your salt lamp
A Himalayan salt lamp is low-maintenance. With a few simple habits it will last for years:
- Keep it dry: is the lamp off for a longer period? Cover it with a plastic bag to prevent it absorbing moisture, especially in summer or in damp weather.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the lamp with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Don't use cleaning products or much water.
- Bulb: use an E14 incandescent bulb (15 watt is ideal for most lamps), not an LED. An LED gives off too little heat to keep the stone dry.
- Coaster: always place the lamp on the supplied wooden base or a coaster to avoid marks on furniture and floors.
