What exactly is Himalayan salt?
Himalayan salt is a natural rock salt mined in the salt mines of the Punjab region of Pakistan, at the foot of the Himalayas. The best-known mine is the Khewra salt mine, one of the largest and oldest in the world. The salt was formed hundreds of millions of years ago from evaporated ancient seas.
The characteristic pink to orange colour comes from traces of iron and other minerals that occur naturally in the salt. Depending on where in the mine it comes from, the colour can vary from almost white to deep red.
Unlike regular table salt, Himalayan salt is barely refined. It is crushed, rinsed and ground — that's all. No anti-caking agents or other additives are added. That makes it popular with people who consciously choose less processed products.
Buying Himalayan salt for the kitchen
In the kitchen, pink Himalayan salt is a versatile ingredient. Its taste is slightly milder and rounder than regular table salt. You can use it when cooking pasta and soups, in a marinade for meat and vegetables, as a finishing touch on a salad or carpaccio, or simply as table salt in a salt shaker or grinder.
When choosing Himalayan salt for the kitchen, the grain size matters:
| Grain size | Use |
|---|---|
| Extra fine (0.3–0.5 mm) | Baking, sauces, where salt needs to dissolve quickly |
| Fine (0.5–1 mm) | Everyday cooking, marinades, eggs |
| Medium (1–2 mm) | Pasta, soups, vegetables, meat |
| Coarse (2–5 mm) | Salt grinder, finishing touch, grilling |
Not sure which grain size suits you? Finely ground salt is the most versatile choice for everyday use. Use coarse salt if you want to grind it yourself or as a decorative finish.
Besides loose salt, HimalayaStyling also offers Himalayan salt stone cooking plates. You can heat these thick slabs of salt stone on the barbecue or in the oven and prepare or serve food directly on them. The stone gives your dishes a subtle salty flavour and makes for a spectacular presentation at the table. Clean it with a slightly damp cloth, without soap. With good care, a salt stone lasts a long time.
Buying a Himalayan salt lamp: atmosphere and warm light
A Himalayan salt lamp is made from a solid piece of pink salt stone with a fitting for a warm incandescent bulb. The orange-pink light shining through the stone gives any room a calm, intimate atmosphere. That's why salt lamps are popular in bedrooms, living rooms, meditation rooms and office corners.
When choosing a salt lamp, its size determines the lighting effect. As a guideline: 1 kg of salt stone per 4 m². That means:
- Small room or bedside table (up to 4 m²): 1–2 kg lamp
- Bedroom or study (approx. 10 m²): 2–3 kg lamp
- Living room (approx. 20 m²): 5–6 kg lamp or several smaller lamps
- Large open space (25+ m²): 7–8 kg lamp or a combination
Every salt lamp is unique: no two are the same in shape, colour or texture. At HimalayaStyling you can choose from natural salt lamps in many sizes and figure lamps in special shapes.
Important: don't place salt lamps in damp rooms such as the bathroom. Himalayan salt is hygroscopic — it attracts moisture — and can start to ‘sweat’ in a damp environment. Switch the lamp on regularly with an E14 bulb (not an LED) so the warmth evaporates the moisture. Find more tips in why is my salt lamp leaking?

Himalayan salt for a bath ritual
Himalayan salt is also popular for a relaxing moment at home:
- Salt bath: dissolve 200–300 grams of coarse Himalayan bath salt in a bath of about 37 °C. Let the salt dissolve completely before you get in. A maximum of 20 minutes is a good guideline.
- Foot bath: add 3–4 tablespoons of coarse salt to a bowl of warm water and let your feet soak for 15–20 minutes. A few drops of essential oil add extra fragrance.
- Homemade scrub: mix coarse Himalayan salt with coconut, olive or almond oil and gently massage it over the skin. Rinse off with warm water. Test on a small patch of skin first.

Himalayan salt versus regular table salt: what's the difference?
Regular table salt goes through an intensive refining process, and substances such as iodine and anti-caking agents are often added. The result is almost pure sodium chloride with a sharp, pronounced salty taste.
Himalayan salt is less processed and contains traces of other minerals besides sodium chloride. It is no substitute for iodised salt if you want to get iodine through salt — but for taste and experience, many people find it a pleasant choice. If you want both, combine Himalayan salt in the kitchen with iodised salt.
