Why is my salt lamp leaking? Causes & solutions

lekkende zoutlamp

HimalayaStyling Nederland |

Is your salt lamp getting wet, dripping, or looking like it's "sweating"? That's perfectly normal. A Himalayan salt lamp can attract moisture, which can give the appearance of a leak. Fortunately, this is easily solved.

Why does a salt lamp leak?

The main reason is simple: salt is hygroscopic . This means it attracts moisture from the air . Especially in:

  • damp rooms
  • cold rooms with condensation
  • rooms with fogged windows
  • spaces close to an outside wall
  • bathrooms, basements or sheds
  • near an open window or in a draft

This moisture can cause droplets to become visible. However, your salt lamp doesn't melt; it only leaks moisture.

The three most common causes

1. The lamp is in a room that is too humid

A humid environment immediately creates more condensation, causing the lamp to leak faster.

2. The lamp is too close to a window

Windows are often cold. Warm moisture from the room condenses on them, attracting your salt lamp.

3. The light is off too often

A salt lamp needs to heat up to evaporate the moisture it absorbs. If it's often turned off, the moisture will remain.

The Solutions (Super Simple)

✔ 1. Let the salt lamp burn daily

Heat prevents moisture. Therefore, it's best to leave your salt lamp on for as long as possible every day. Use an E14 bulb – not an LED, as LEDs don't emit heat.

✔ 2. Do not place the lamp near a window

Place your salt lamp at least 50 cm from a window , especially in winter. This prevents condensation from being absorbed directly by the salt.

✔ 3. Avoid damp areas

It is best not to place a salt lamp in:

  • bathrooms
  • cellars
  • unheated spaces
  • damp verandas or sheds

✔ 4. Protect the surface underneath

Always use the wooden base (standard) or a coaster made of cork, glass or wood.

What to do if your lamp is already leaking?

Very simple:

  • Turn off the light
  • Removes cable and light
  • Let the lamp dry on a towel for 24–48 hours
  • Then turn the lamp on daily

Your salt lamp will dry and become beautiful again by itself.

Is leakage bad for the salt lamp?

No. It's part of salt's natural behavior. Your lamp won't melt, break, or lose its effectiveness.
