Himalayan salt is a special natural product: each piece is unique, formed over millions of years, and varies in color. But why is one Himalayan salt lamp pure white, another gray, and yet another warm pink or deep red? The answer lies in nature itself: the iron content and other minerals in the salt. In this blog, we explain what the color of a salt lamp indicates, how iron oxide plays a role, and what the different colors mean for your interior.

Why do salt lamps have different colors?
Himalayan salt consists of approximately 98% sodium chloride (table salt). It is precisely in the remaining 2% that the trace minerals that determine the color are found. These include:
- Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) – the main factor for pink and red hues
- Magnesium
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Other natural sediments and trace elements
Iron oxide is particularly influential: the higher the iron content, the warmer and deeper the color of the salt lamp.
Color and iron content at a glance
| Iron Oxide Content | Salt Lamp Color | Brief Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Very low | White | Hardly any iron, therefore no pink or red hue |
| Low–medium | Gray | Mixing with dark minerals and sediments |
| Medium | Light pink | Subtle iron content, soft salmon or pastel pink color |
| High | Classic pink/orange | Rich in iron oxide, the typical Himalayan color |
| Very high | Red | Deep, fiery hues with an intense glow |
White salt lamps – pure, rare, and low in minerals

White salt lamps are among the rarest variants. They contain the lowest iron content and virtually no colored sediments. As a result, the crystals remain clear and light.
- Very low iron oxide content
- Fresh, minimalist appearance
- Fits beautifully in modern, light interiors

Grey salt lamps – tough, earthy, and rich in minerals

Grey salt lamps are formed when the salt is in contact with dark sediment layers, clay, and other minerals. The iron content is often low to medium, but the extra minerals give the crystals a cool, grey to anthracite-colored structure.
- Earthy, rugged appearance
- Ideal for industrial or modern interiors
- Unique, less standard than the pink variants

Pink salt lamps – the classic among Himalayan lamps

Most people associate a salt lamp with a pink/orange Himalayan lamp. This color is created by an average iron content in combination with other minerals.
- Variation from light salmon to warm orange-pink
- Approximately 90% of all salt lamps fall into this category
- Known for their soft, calming glow

Red salt lamps – highest iron content & intensely warm atmosphere

Red salt lamps contain the highest iron oxide content. This gives them their deep, fiery color. When the lamp is lit, it creates a warm amber to fiery red glow that instantly adds atmosphere.
- Relatively rare compared to pink lamps
- Popular in luxurious interiors, yoga, and wellness areas
- Very atmospheric as accent lighting in the evening

Does the color of a salt lamp change over time?
A frequently asked question: "Does a salt lamp change color if you use it often?"
- The color does not become lighter or darker due to the heat of the bulb.
- The crystal does not discolor with age.
- However, the surface may temporarily appear darker due to moisture (condensation or humidity). Once the lamp warms up and dries, this disappears.

Does the color influence the function of a salt lamp?
From a purely scientific perspective, the color of the salt crystal makes no difference in any ionization or air purification. The color mainly indicates the origin layer in the mine and the mineral profile (especially iron).
In practice, people choose a color mainly based on:
- White – fresh, minimalist, light
- Gray – rugged, earthy, industrial
- Pink/orange – classic, warm, calming
- Red – intense, luxurious, deep atmosphere

Briefly summarized
- The color of a salt lamp is determined by its iron content and minerals.
- More iron = warmer color (pink to red).
- Less iron = cooler hue (white and sometimes grey).
- Each color has its own look and feel in the home.
