Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder are the 100% natural alternatives to chemical detergents that are convincing more and more households. They're gentle on your skin, your clothes and the environment — and they work surprisingly well. In this article you'll read everything about how to use soap nuts & soap nut shell powder, what the benefits are, and who they're best suited for.

What are soap nuts & soap nut shell powder?

Soap nuts, also known as soapberries or soapnut shells, are the dried shells of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree, which grows naturally in India and Nepal. The shells contain saponin: a plant-based soap substance that is released as soon as the nuts come into contact with water. That substance cleans effectively, without a single drop of synthetic chemicals.

Soap nut shell powder is ground from those same shells. The powder dissolves faster in water and therefore also works excellently at lower wash temperatures such as 30°C. Anyone who prefers a soluble detergent chooses the powder. Anyone who wants as little packaging as possible chooses the whole nuts.

Both variants are fully biodegradable, free of fragrance and colourants, compostable after use, and ideal for people with sensitive skin or allergies.

How do you use soap nuts & soap nut shell powder?

Using soap nuts

Put 4 to 6 soap nuts in the cotton bag included with your order and place the bag directly in the drum with your laundry. After washing, take the bag out, let the nuts dry, and reuse them. One portion of soap nuts is good for 3 to 5 washes. Have the nuts turned grey and soft? Then they're spent and you can compost them.

Tip: When washing cold (below 30°C), first soak the soap nuts for 5 minutes in a cup of hot water. This activates the saponins even at low temperatures.

Using soap nut shell powder

Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of soap nut shell powder per wash. Sprinkle the powder directly into the drum or dissolve it in a little water before adding it. It works at all temperatures and is therefore also perfect for delicate fabrics and baby clothing.

The benefits of soap nuts & soap nut shell powder

There are many reasons why soap nuts & soap nut shell powder have become so popular so quickly:

  • Good for sensitive skin — no synthetic fragrances, preservatives or irritating substances. Ideal for people with eczema, psoriasis or an allergy, and for washing baby clothes.
  • Eco-friendly — chemical detergents contain phosphates and other substances harmful to aquatic environments. Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder are 100% plant-based, biodegradable and minimally packaged.
  • Economical to use — one kilogram of soap nuts is good for 100 to 150 washes, more economical than most conventional detergents.
  • No fabric softener needed — laundry washed with soap nuts feels naturally soft. A separate fabric softener is completely unnecessary.
  • Versatile — besides detergent, soap nuts & soap nut shell powder can also be used as a cleaning product for the kitchen and bathroom, as shampoo or body wash (dissolved in water), as a cleanser for pets, and even as washing-up liquid.

Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder for pets

One of the lesser-known uses is washing pets. The mild, fragrance-free nature makes soap nuts & soap nut shell powder perfect as shampoo for dogs and cats with sensitive skin. Dissolve a tablespoon of soap nut shell powder in warm water, let it cool, and use it as bath water. Your pet will smell fresh, without harsh chemicals.

Do soap nuts also work for white laundry?

Soap nuts don't contain bleach, so white clothing may discolour slightly over time. For a white wash, add a scoop of baking soda to the drum, or let the laundry dry outside in the sun. That way your white laundry stays fresh and bright without using chemical bleaches.

Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder versus chemical detergents

Conventional detergents often contain a mix of synthetic substances: phosphates, optical brighteners, artificial fragrances and sometimes microplastics. Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder are the opposite: 100% plant-based, biodegradable and free of synthetic additives. The cleaning power comes solely from saponin, a substance the plant produces naturally — no lab, no chemistry.

It also makes a huge difference in packaging waste. One 500-gram bag of soap nuts replaces several plastic bottles of detergent. Soap nut shell powder is offered in recycled paper or cardboard. Soap nuts & soap nut shell powder are therefore not just better for your skin and nature, but also practical: fewer purchases, less waste, less hassle.

Curious whether soap nuts & soap nut shell powder also work for your situation? Start with a trial pack and discover the difference for yourself in your daily wash routine. Most people notice after just a few washes that their laundry comes out of the machine at least as clean — and often softer — than with ordinary detergent.

Storage and usage tips

  • Store soap nuts in a dry, cool place in a sealed container — this way they'll keep for years.
  • Store soap nut shell powder preferably in an airtight jar to prevent clumping.
  • Use a higher dose for heavy soiling or hard water — optionally add a splash of vinegar to the rinse water as an extra descaler.
