A salt lamp in the nursery or child's room is a popular night light. The soft, warm light is pleasant during a night feed or when you pop in to check, without having to switch on the main light. In this article you'll learn which salt lamp suits best and how to use it safely.

In short: choose a small night light or USB salt lamp, place it out of your child's reach, keep cords away and don't put it in a damp corner or next to a humidifier.

Why a salt lamp as a night light?

A salt lamp doesn't give off harsh white light, but a subdued, warm orange glow. That makes it suitable as a night light: you can see enough to care for your child, while the room stays dark and calm. A lamp made of genuine Himalayan salt is also a lovely decorative accent in the room.

Which salt lamp suits a nursery?

Plug-in night light

The Dolphin night light and the Tulip night light plug directly into the wall socket. So there's no loose cord for a child to pull on. They have an on/off switch and a small 7-watt bulb.

USB salt lamp

A USB salt lamp runs on a USB adapter or power bank. It has an LED light and therefore barely gets warm. Handy on a tall cupboard or chest of drawers, but do mind the cord.

Small salt lamp

If you want a real salt lamp, choose a small size, such as the 3 to 4 kg salt lamp. A large salt lamp is heavy and gives more light than you need in a bedroom. You'll find all sizes in our Himalayan salt lamps.

How to use a salt lamp safely in a child's room

  • Out of your child's reach. A salt lamp is heavy and gets warm from the bulb. Place it high up and stable, or choose a socket your child can't reach. Never in or next to the cot or playpen.
  • No licking. Small children put everything in their mouths. A salt lamp is made of real salt, so keep it away from little hands and mouths.
  • Cords out of the way. Route the cord of a USB lamp or salt lamp so your child can't reach it or pull on it.
  • Not next to a humidifier. Salt attracts moisture. Next to a humidifier or in a damp corner, a salt lamp will start to 'sweat'. Read more in Why is my salt lamp leaking?
  • Check the cable and fitting. If you see a damaged cord or a loose switch, replace the cable before using the lamp again.
  • Use a coaster. Place a salt lamp on a wooden base or coaster so any moisture doesn't soak into the furniture.

Can a salt lamp stay on all night?

Yes, our night lights and salt lamps can stay on all night. Do make sure the lamp stands free, not against curtains, cuddly toys or fabric, so the heat can escape.
